Located near Byron Bay, The Buttery Residential Therapeutic Community (TC) is part of The Buttery’s Continuum of Care. This includes The Buttery’s Maintenance to Abstinence Program (MTA) for those who wish to withdraw from an opiate substitute maintenance program. It is co-located with the TC. Residential treatment is available for people diverted from the courts through the MERIT program. The Buttery’s residential user-pays program, The Buttery Private is a social enterprise located near Murwillumbah.
The Buttery’s community outreach programs complement the residential programs. They support people in the community who prefer a harm minimisation approach such as counselling and education. There are also aftercare programs following residential rehabilitation. Programs include: CORE, a six-week day program held on rotation in either Byron Bay, Tweed Heads or Lismore; half-way houses for people who have completed a TC or MTA program; b.well, for people with co-occurring mental health and substance use issues; INTRA, a drug counselling and health promotion service; The Northern Rivers Gambling Counselling Service; a free family counselling program for the loved ones of people affected by substance use; Footprints to Wellbeing, a mental health support program and other programs in the community for youth and to help prevent relapse.
How can we help you?
The Buttery has three residential programs. The Buttery TC, a long-term program for people 20 years and over with drug and/or alcohol issues. The Maintenance To Abstinence program (MTA) for people who wish to withdraw safely from and opiate substitute maintenance program to pursue an abstinence-based lifestyle. The Buttery Private, a user-pays program for people with non-acute mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, workplace burnout and underlying substance use issues. Surplus funds from this program help fund The Buttery’s charitable works.
Residential programs are part of The Buttery’s Continuum of Care which includes community-based programs that support prevention, treatment and non-relapse. Among these are CORE, a day rehab program; b.well for people with dual diagnosis (mental health and substance use issues); a free family counselling program; INTRA provides counselling and support groups in the community for people with substance use issues; Northern Rivers Gambling Counselling Service is for people with gambling issues and for their families; RPAS and BYTS are non-relapse programs for young people and footprints to recovery supports people with mental health issues.
Who can we help?

Where are we located?
The Buttery’s TC and MTA are located at Binna Burra near Bangalow in northern NSW. The Buttery Private is located near Murwillumbah, NSW. Buttery community-based programs serve people from Tweed Heads in the north, south to Port Macquarie and west to Kyogle, Grafton and the Dorrigo Peninsula.
Working with partners
The Buttery delivers its footprints2wellbeing with Rekindling The Spirit, Wellways and Werin. Funding for Buttery programs is via NSW Health and the North Coast Primary Health Network, part of the Commonwealth Department of Health. The NSW Responsible Gambling Fund supports the gambling counselling program.
